Learning Styles in the Class

1 Review the taxonomies of learning styles. Do you know what these types mean? 
  • V-A-R-K
  • Field dependent - Field independent
  • Global - Sequential
  • Active - Reflective
  • Sensing - Intuitive
  • Visual -Verbal
Inspiration:
2 Make sure you can explain the typology and the differences of each type to anyone. Try to create  examples. Recalling specific people might help.
3 Choose one pair of types. Using the printed material available, design several tasks on the same topic, with the same teaching objectives, but emphasising and respecting different learning style preferences.

    Task one : Visual - 1) draw a picture of your room
    2) name objects in the picture
    3) monitoring + discuss within the group

    Verbal - 1) give a list of prepositions
    2) formule sentences about your room using the
    prepositions
    3) correction by the teacher

  2. Learning project for kids

    Two types of learners

    Visual and verbal

    Task – listen to a story about two worms (Willy and Wendy) and try to draw what you can hear.
    For verbal learners

    Task – assing given pictures to text parts from a story about two worms (Willy and Wendy), look at the pictures and describe the situation with your own words

  3. Target group: 6th grade
    Goal: Introduction of vocabulary connected to furniture
    Material: Our Room
    Task 1: Visual type: Cut pictures of the furniture out of the paper and then organize at least 20 in the room. Explain your choice of furniture and placement.
    Task 2: Verbal type: Run through the listed vocabulary and create at least two categories in which you can sort them. Explain. Then number the 15 most important pieces of furniture (15 = most important, 1= least important). Explain your choice.
    Timing: T1: 30, T2: 20 mins, organisation: in pairs

  4. Target group: 4th grade, elementary
    Material: Holidays
    Objectives: vocabulary (how to pronounce and write the words correct)

    kids are learning these words by activities (dancing, singing, pronouncing)
    Task 1 - Reflective watching the video of the song - written form of vocabulary. Kids are learning these words by activities (repeting, pronounciation)
    Time: 5 minutes

    Task 2 - Active - flashcard pantomime - the students are going to act/perform - that way they acquire new vocabulary within the group
    Task 2 - Reflective - flashcards pexeso - they can think it through, work in pairs and they can write it down
    Time: 10 - 15 minutes

    Objectives: Likes, dislikes

    Sensing/Intuitive learners

    Task 1 Sensing l: Writing sentences based on table table with smiley and frowny faces, with exanple sentences
    For ex: Kate :( (picture of apple) ...... Kate doesn't like apples. ... and so on.
    I :) (picture of apple) ..... I like apples

    Task 1 Intuitive l: Making own sentences, creating own possibilities
    He, she, I, they ..... like, likes, don't like, doesn't like .... apples, watching TV, doing homewrok

    Tasks, of crouse, takes places after the children know the basics

    Material: Christmas
    Objectives: the proper using of words WHERE/WERE, and the use of past tense
    Task 1 Active: Complete the excercise. Roleplaying: Reading the exercise out loud, each childer has its own character.
    Task 1 Reflective: Read the text. Then listen and complete the exercise.
    Task 2 Active : Work in pairs, answer questions in excersice T1 and T2.
    Task 2 Reflective: Write your answers on paper. Then read you answers out loud and compare it with other students.
    Timing task 1: Active - 20min, Reflective - 10min
    Timing task 2: Active - 15min, Reflective - 20min

    - OBJECTIVES: WH-questions, possessives (mummy’s, etc.)
    - TASK 1: Look at the picture (visual), Say what you see (verbal), Look at the text (visual), Read the text aloud (verbal), Say what is missing (verbal), Find WH-questions (visual), Teacher explains what are the WH-questions (verbal), Look at the questions (visual), Answer the questions (verbal), Teacher explains possessives (verbal), Look at them (visual), Answer the questions (verbal)

    Target group: 4th-6th grade, Elementary school

    Material: Train station and workroom (pictures where picture A1 and A2 are the same, but details are different)

    Objectives: Teach the kids some basic vocabulary and then support the use of the vocabulary through a "picture game"

    Task 0.5: Divide children in groups and give them one paper with vocabulary and one paper with the pictures.

    Task 1: Each group will have a look at the given pictures for a while and they will try to form some basic sentences about the differences between picture A1, A2 and B1, B2 using the given vocabulary - Visual learner searching for differences and verbal learner writing the things down.

    Task 2: Every group will be called to tell the teacher a few sentences about the differences in the pictures.

    Time for Task 0.5 - 2 minutes
    Time for Task 1 - 15 minutes max.
    Time for Task 2 - 10 minutes

    Material: December unit
    Objectives: Christmas Vocabulary
    Task 1: Active learner: group work - make a project - draw anything what belongs to Christmas, search in the dictionary
    Task 2: Reflective learner: brainstorming, write what are you going to do at Christmas (use vocabulary from brainstorming)
    Timing task: 30 min

    Material: SUPERSNAKE
    Target: Working with text, learning new words.

    Task 1: VISUAL LEARNER: Read the text and look at the pictures. Find out what happened. Find words that you dont know and write it down. Then use a dictionary in the clasroom and find translation and meaning of the words.

    Task 1: VERBAL LEARNER: With your partner, choose who will be Wendy and who will be Will and read your part. The rest of the text read together loudly. Try find out what happened and find words that you dont know. Then we will discuss it with the whole class.

    Timing task 1 - 15 - 20 minutes
    Organisation: VISUAL LEARNER: work alone
    VERBAL LEARNER: work in pairs

    Target: tense recongnition, connectivity, vocabulary

    Task:
    A) Look at the pictures and try to figure out what is happening (the visual learner will be more active).
    B) Write down the story (the verbal learner will be more active).
    C) Read the text and compare your story with the text.
    D) Tell the class how the story differes.

    Organisation: Work in pairs, one verbal and one visual learner.
    Timing: 25 - 30 minutes.

    Task 1 (visual)
    1. Show students the picture.
    2. Name the locations in the picture.
    3. Brainstorm the activities connected to the places.
    4. Use the vocabulary on a different example (picture).

    Taks 2 (verbal)
    1. Make a list of places and related activities for one week.
    2. Go through all of them and make sentences using the vocabulary.
    a. Pick people to read one sentence aloud.
    3. Revise.
